Only thing that stopped "New Era (Ambassadors Of The Funky Groove)" from being a true single, was the potshot I took at Prince during the climatic bridge of the song.
For those who don't know--or are adverse to Google when it comes to their favorite artists--directly AFTER The 1985 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS Broadcast (broadcast LIVE on ABC in the USA), in which Prince was a winner (on behalf of "PURPLE RAIN"--which he and his band The Revolution performed), according to sources from Jet and Ebony Magazine, Prince's bodyguard, Chick Huntsberry (one massive white boy!!) assaulted a young fan who waited for Prince as the superstar left out the back door, injuring the kid. Hunstberry was arrested and Prince, who seemed uncouth about the assault (since he was in "superstar-mode") bailed-out Huntsberry--who became a de-facto celebrity in his own right because of it.
WELL, BLACK MUSICIANS--most notably those in THE FUNK COMMUNITY, and more famously THE GAP BAND--laid into The Purple Rock Start for this (The GAP BAND, via their animated video for "DISRESPECT"---recorded long before the 1985 AMAs).
Personally, as a Prince Fan (RIP Prince Rogers Nelson, and thanks for the music), at the time, it was something not even I could let down...so "New Era (Ambassadors Of The Funky Groove)" became a deliberate slam. Personal discretion kept this track in the vaults, but now, since The Statute Of Limitations have long since "expired"--here you go.
lyrics
"NEW ERA (AMBASSADORS OF THE FUNKY GROOVE)"--
Everybody, if you're looking for a good time
Put your hands together--Everybody say, 'YEAH!' (YEAH!!)
Everybody, if you're looking for a good time
Put your hands together--Everybody say, 'YEAH!' (YEAH!!)
We are Ambassadors Of The Funky Groove
We like to see your Body Move
If you like to Jam, hey, we'll show you how
Just throw your hands in the air and shout:
"IT'S A NEW ERA NOW!!"
(Sometimes) Sometimes I feel The Thunder
(Sometimes) Sometimes I feel The Heat (But...)
Yet, all the time I feel The Rhythm
That knocks me out My Seat!
Sometimes I feel The Thunder
Sometimes I feel The Heat
Yet, all the time I feel The Rhythm
That knocks me out My Seat!
I wanna tell you a little story of a Man who's afraid to funk
He's afraid to even Get Down
Let alone do 'The Freeze'
We decided to show that sucker how to Bump
We say, 'If you don't wanna funk,
Hey Sucker, Get On Your Knees!'
So, Everybody, if you're looking for a good time
Put your hands together--Everybody say, 'YEAH!' (YEAH!!)
Everybody, if you're looking for a good time (I know you are!)
Put your hands together--Everybody say, 'YEAH!' (YEAH!!)
(It's on you!!)
(I said) We are Ambassadors Of The Funky Groove
We like to see your Body Move
If you like to jam, hey, we'll show you how
Just throw your hands in the air and shout:
(WOO!!)
"IT'S A NEW ERA NOW!!"
(Sometimes!) Sometimes I feel The Thunder
(Sometimes!) Sometimes I feel The Heat (I said, 'But..')
Yet, all the time I feel The Rhythm
That knocks me Out My Seat!
(Sometimes!) Sometimes I feel The Thunder
(Sometimes!) Sometimes I feel The Heat (But...)
Yet, all the time I feel The Rhythm
That knocks me Out My Seat!
(yeah, yeah!)
Sometimes I feel The Thunder
Sometimes I feel The Heat
Yet, all the time I feel The Rhythm
That knocks me Out My Seat!
Sometimes I feel The Thunder
Sometimes I feel The Heat
Yet, all the time I feel The Rhythm
That knocks me Out My Seat!
~~~Now,
Prince made a ruckus at The American Music Awards
He had to bail out his Bodyguard
Got down on his knees
Couldn't do what he please
We decided to show that Purple Punk
How to Funk~~~
(Yeah-yeah...put your hands together...
Yeah...time to get ready to funk...
YEAH! HO!! Dig it...)
One--Two--Three--Four...
Cosmic Funk, Git Ready To Go...Sang!!
