about

ABOUT "Terry Greene"--

'Terry Greene' is a teenager who (thru the neighborhood pusher) discovers the wonders of his 'namesake'-- only, we call it 'reefer', 'weed', 'grass'.....marijuana. (This is the tag-caption I used for the original SOUNDCLICK Upload in May, 2007.)

As a song, "Terry Greene" is one of the LOUDEST Tracks I ever recorded. It's also one of the few times you'd hear something akin to a "LIVE" sound from me (both tracks were done via 'air-check'---literally into a free-standing tape recorder!).

Using the 'Piano/Guitar' mode (and with the exception of the percussion, NOTHING ELSE!), I shot the keyboard thru a portable 15-watt amp (the amp was only 8 inches tall!), turned that little piece of shit up to 10--and the treble on middle, and had the tape recorder way on the other end of the room.

Vocally, the background vocals were shouted into a mic, but coming out of my much larger 4-speaker bass/PA amp, at the same time as the music. The Lead Vocal was done in the same fashion, but was much louder, so when I did the mix, it came out totally rambunctious!

Also, it works, because the song IS about a teenager discovering marijuana for the first time, and his pusher giving the sales pitch (to which our 'hero' doesn't seem to be listening).

Then, there's that chorus which shows how seductive ANY addiction REALLY IS:

"If you decide to take a puff,
You won't just where you've been.
And if it makes you feel good,
All you have to do is come back again."

Of course, you and I know that I'm only 'preaching to the choir' regarding THEY WHO GET HIGH.

NOW, as for "Superhero"---

"In a world gone bad, what ever happened to the good? Lots of 'villains', but no 'heroes'?!"

....is the caption I wrote for it's SOUNDCLICK Upload in 2007.

In reality, as a song, "Superhero" was "The Great Big AFTER-THOUGHT!!"

You see, it was NOT a part of the original album configuration of "The Secrets Of The Cosmos"--it wasn't even on the 'copyright cassette' I registered in August, 1984.

There was only supposed to be ONE Song on Side Two of the Album-Cassette ("The Secrets Of The Cosmos" Title Track itself--all 20 minutes and some change of it!)--

...but it was a C-60 CASSETTE-ALBUM, not a Vinyl 12-inch LP (and at 30 Minutes per side, there was plenty of room), so, what the hell. In the end, Side B of the final "The Secrets Of The Cosmos" Cassette-Album master topped-out at nearly 28 minutes (whole album: about 57 minutes!!).

Also, it felt better closing the whole thing on a upbeat note, instead of just that dour nearly half-hour-long instrumental experiment.

Finally, in November of 1984, "Terry Greene"/"Superhero" became the SECOND cassette single from "The Secrets Of The Cosmos"--

supplanting "Bullshit Alley (The Ghetto)" as the possible choice for the second single. ("B.S. Alley" finally gets it's DUE as a single in 2019.)

Finally, "Superhero" was the THIRD TRACK (along with "Frida, Don't You Cry" and "Rocketship"--all from "The Secrets Of The Cosmos" album) to be vocally re-recorded in '89. It sounded alright--
'til the second half, where it became kinda tame, compared to the wildness in the original version--which is the one we have here.
